Meaning light or shine in Italian, the Mazda Luce was launched as its flagship passenger car.
It was Japan’s first domestically-produced 1.5-liter sedan powered by the advanced OHC engine with 6-passenger capacity. Armed with the sedan with impressive vehicle size and dynamics, Mazda started full-scale export to the European markets. It was around this time that the company built its key plant, Ujina No.1 Plant (U1). The Mazda Luce literally became the "light" that navigated the company to enter the new era.
